Kim Sumbler’s Journey of Executive Director
Kim Sumbler has been appointed executive director of the New York State Athletic Commission. Sumbler was a successful regulator of both amateur and pro combative sports at the Seneca Nation of Indians Athletic Commission before joining the Commission. She has regulated MMA and Boxing on Seneca Nation Territories ever since the Commission was founded in 2008.
Kim helped the SNI Department of Justice develop the SNIAC rules and regulations regarding unarmed combat sports, by which the Commission currently is governed. Kim has since developed the combative sport program, including written department standard operating procedure and related policies. She also created all documents and forms necessary to regulate combative sporting events within the guidelines set forth by federally mandated policies.
Sumbler is also an active member of Association of Boxing Commissions, where she previously served on the Tribal Affairs Committee. She traveled with other members of the TAC to Native American Tribes in the United States, both individually and as part of a team, to help develop responsible regulatory bodies that include appropriate regulation of combative sport with an emphasis on safety for the participants and maintaining the integrity. Kim has been able to establish and cultivate strong relationships with more than one hundred qualified MMA official licensed through ABC. Kim has built up a large pool of officiating staff who are professional and consistently produce high-quality work.
Sumbler has a General Arts and Sciences degree from Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology and a Law and Security Administration degree from the same college. She has also received numerous trainings, including in the areas of Incident Command and Code Enforcement from the NYC Office of Emergency Management and Leadership Development from colleges across the country. She is a member of the Association of Boxing Commissions as well as the National Fire Protection Association and the National Safety Council.

On Wednesday, a representative of the New York Department of State told MMA Junkie that Sumbler resigned recently for personal reasons. Kim Sumbler Resigns and said Boxing Scene was the first to report the news. She left the position in order to take care of her elderly parents.
Matthew Delaglio will replace Sumbler in an interim capacity. He has been working for the NYDOS, and most recently, the NYSAC, since 2015. Delaglio worked previously for Main Events, a New Jersey-based boxing promotion.
Sumbler’s resignation letter to MMA Junkie stated that “serving the State of New York and the greater combat sports communities, as well as the athletes we protect, has given me a sense of pride, belonging and purpose which no other organization could provide.” While it will be difficult to not wake up in this amazing environment filled with amazing individuals every morning, I have to focus on my health and family moving forward.

Robert J. Rodriguez, New York’s Secretary of State, lauded Sumbler, who served as the executive director of New York State’s boxing and MMA for many years. He described her as “an esteemed colleague and friend” and said that she “has made significant contributions and broken barriers to the world of MMA and boxing in New York State and left a lasting impression.”
Before Kim Sumbler Resigns, she became executive director of NYSAC in November 2017, just 14 months after mixed martial arts regulation was approved by the state. Sumbler was the Seneca Nation of Indians Athletic Commission’s combat sports regulator for nine years before she joined NYSAC.
