Daniel S. Hurley

Daniel S. Hurley is the current head coach of the men’s team of the University of Connecticut Huskies. He was born on January 16, 1973. He currently works as a college basketball coach in the US. Under Hurley’s direction, UConn won the 2023 and 2024 NCAA Division I national titles in consecutive years. He has coaching stints at Wagner and Rhode Island before.

Early life and education

Bob Hurley Sr. and Christine Hurley brought up Hurley, Bobby, and Melissa when they were born on January 16, 1973, in Jersey City, New Jersey. The legendary high school coach Bob Hurley Sr. has received Hall of Fame induction. Current Arizona State head coach Bobby has a background as a guard with the Duke Blue Devils and the Sacramento Kings.
When Hurley was a student at Jersey City’s St. Anthony High School—where his father was the head coach for a long time—he showed extraordinary basketball ability. He oversaw the team to an unprecedented 31-1 record as a senior, helping them to the No. 2 ranking in the nation.
He played collegiate basketball for five years at Seton Hall, one of which was a redshirt year. For his first three years on the team, P. J. Carlesimo served as head coach.
During his time at Seton Hall, Hurley had a life-altering encounter with Sister Catherine Waters, a psychologist. Even though he won the 2023 NCAA title, he still makes time to talk to Sr. Catherine and show her how much she means to him.

Sports career of Dan Hurley

Hurley oversaw the Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School varsity program from 2001 until 2010. Throughout his time there, the New Jersey school’s basketball program was lifted to the level of one of the most prestigious in the country.
As head coach at Wagner College from 2010 to 2012, he set a record with a 25-6 win-loss record, which was later broken in the 2011–2012 season.
His tenure as head coach at URI began in 2012 and ended in 2018. During his tenure, the Rams made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1999 in 2017 and 2018. Instead of accepting a multi-year offer from Rhode Island, Hurley decided to become head coach of the Huskies at the University of Connecticut.
His brother Bobby was an assistant coach under him from 2010 to 2013 at Rhode Island and Wagner.
On March 22, 2018, he became the head coach of the Connecticut Huskies. He led the Huskies to their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2016, in 2021 they repeated the feat in 2022, however they were eliminated in the first round both times. Together with the Huskies, he won the 2023 NCAA championship. His original deal with UConn was extended for six years and $32.1 million in June 2023.
With Hurley at the helm, the Huskies accomplished the unthinkable in 2023–24, setting a new school record with 37 victories. They also earned the Big East regular season and tournament titles, were the first team in school history to be seeded first in the NCAA tournament, and won the national championship two years in a row. He was honored with the titles of Naismith College Coach of the Year and Sporting News National Coach of the Year.

Andrew and Danny Hurley were the offspring of Dan and Andrea. The eldest son, Danny, attended Seton Hall University and, according to his LinkedIn profile, followed a similar trajectory. His advisory work for New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy complements his role on the Hurley Family Foundation’s board. According to his LinkedIn page, Dan Hurley Jr. earned a master’s degree in public administration in 2021 after finishing his undergraduate degree in history from Seton Hall University.
The newest member of the Hurley family, Andrew, plays on the basketball team for the UConn Huskies. He won the Connecticut state title while attending East Catholic High School before joining his dad’s club. The coach’s son, who isn’t a scholarship player, has played a significant role in the Huskies’ tournament run, and he had a significant advantage going into their games versus UConn. He and his dad have talked about how important it is to be there for one other every step of the way to the national championship game.
