The abdominal sweatbands seem to be a great accessory for workouts. Just wrap it around your waist, and you will sweat like crazy. This must mean that your body is working harder, and you are losing weight. You may be mistaken.

The abdominal sweatbands, which are available at Target, Walmart, and Vitamin Shoppe for around $20, are made of Neoprene and are designed to cause your midsection to sweat more. This should result in you losing inches from your stomach.

Harley Pasternak is a celebrity trainer, author of the “The Body Reset Diet” who describes sweatbands to be “useless”.

He says that it can be dangerous, because your abdominal muscles are not as active. When you use a mechanical support, your abdominal muscles are not as strong.

Trainer adds that simply because you sweat does not mean you are losing weight. He compared it to someone who is sitting in a hot sauna watching football while eating tortilla chips. Although they sweat, he said, that person would not lose any body fat. Pasternak says that body fat is not burned locally, but rather systemically. “Your body burns fat by activating your metabolism. Your metabolism is affected, among other things, by physical activity and genetics. If I wrapped plastic around my left hand, it would not get any thinner than my right.

Dr. Sophia Yen is a co-founder and professor of Stanford University with a clinical emphasis on obesity. She agrees that abdominal waistbands do not work, at least in the long run.

“I don’t think it will work for long,” Yen said. “Anything that involves sweat is temporary.”

She says that you can use it to lose weight if you want to wear a dress later in the evening, or the next morning. However, the weight will come back. She explains that it is similar to having diarrhea.

She says, “all of us lose between five and ten pounds a day when we get diarrhea.”

Jasmine Jones is a Herbalife Health Coach. She says the main thing to lose weight is diet and exercise. The sweatband is an added bonus.

She says, “I’d say that the band is an extra to what someone has done.” “Someone could be using the band while eating horribly and still not see results.”

Diet and nutrition are important factors in losing weight and keeping it off. Jones and Yen agree that weight loss is more about diet than exercise. Yen says that only one patient has lost weight by exercising alone. “He did three hours of cardio from Monday to Friday and five on the weekends.” Pasternak believes there are five important points to losing weight: Be active all day long, get enough sleep, unplug technology, and eat healthy (each meal must contain protein, fiber, and vegetables) and do at least 5 minutes of resistance exercise every day. You cannot lose fat by using a sweatband.

Pasternak: “There’s no such thing as localized or targeted fat loss. You can’t determine where on your body you will lose the most fat.”
